When it comes to dirty laundry, your thoughts might not immediately turn to our Modesto bed bug exterminator. But scientists have discovered evidence of a link between soiled clothes and bed bug infestation that will have you thinking twice the next time you travel.

The Fall and Rise of Bed Bugs

Bed bugs were once fairly common in the U.S. until the post-WWII years, when advancements in pesticides largely eliminated the problem. The respite lasted until the late 1990s, when bed bugs began to reappear in the U.S. as well as Canada, Australia, the U.K. and other countries around the world.

Experts believe that the increase in global travel is a significant factor in the re-emergence of bed bugs. Hotel rooms are a popular gathering site for the pests, making it easy for them to hide in clothing and luggage for travel to a new location.

What Attracts Bed Bugs to Clothing?

In a study published in the September 2017 issue of Scientific Reports, researchers at the University of Sheffield conducted experiments to gain more insight into bed bug movement:

– The setting for the study was two identical temperature-controlled rooms. Each room contained one bag of clean clothes, one bag of dirty clothes, and a population of bed bugs.

– During each repetition of the test, one of the rooms received a higher level of concentrated carbon dioxide to replicate human breathing.

Results in the room minus a “human” presence showed that bed bugs were twice as likely to congregate among the soiled clothes. In the room with the elevated carbon dioxide levels, bed bugs tended to abandon both bags of clothing in search of a human host.

According to the research team, the results suggest that human scents retained in soiled laundry serve to attract bed bugs more readily than non-scented clean clothes. Team member Dr. William Hentley recommends that travelers keep dirty clothes in a sealed bag to prevent access by bed bugs.
