The common perception of cockroaches as indestructible isn’t far from the truth. Hosts of Discovery Channel’s popular show Mythbusters tested this idea by submerging cockroaches underwater for 30 minutes only to see them eventually revive.

Unfortunately, cockroaches aren’t just annoying. They present a serious health risk to humans and animals. Members of our professional Modesto pest control services team share information you need to know about cockroaches to protect your home and family.

Cockroaches: An International Pest

Fossil studies show that cockroaches have been around for more than 300 million years, which is another indication of their remarkable adaptability. In fact, some species can go for as long as one month without food.

While there are currently more than 3,500 known species of cockroaches in existence worldwide, only 55 of these populate the United States. In keeping with their global presence, the four most common species in the U.S. are named American, German, Asian and Oriental.

Why Cockroaches Are a Health Risk

One reason for the unsavory reputation of cockroaches is their tendency to inhabit unsanitary areas such as sewers, garbage disposals, dirty kitchens and bathrooms. Cockroaches are also frequent carriers of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens that cause illness.

In addition to food poisoning, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal disorders, cockroaches can trigger allergic reactions in some people from cockroach excrement and cast-off skins.

Tips to Prevent Cockroach Infestations

– Cockroaches are opportunistic “travelers.” Check for cockroaches or their eggs in bags, luggage and other containers brought into the home.

– Clean kitchens and dining areas promptly after use.

– Non-refrigerated foods should be stored in tightly sealed containers. Garbage should also be kept in closed bins and emptied daily.

– Rinse bottles and cans thoroughly before recycling. Keep the recycling bins clean as well.

– Inspect your home regularly for dripping faucets and leaky pipes. If you find any, repair them immediately to discourage cockroach species that lurk in damp areas.

– Check for holes and cracks around doors, windows, baseboards, cabinets and other places that offer easy access to cockroaches.
